Byron Scherf:

It has been ten years since you were convicted of murdering C/O Jayme Biendl, and over seven since we last corresponded. I am no longer with DOC, so I have the freedom to write to offenders. I still have unresolved questions about:

  • Your lack of genuine repentance for the murder of Jayme Biendl.
  • Your malice toward A.S. that led you to refuse to serve on the WSR Family Worship Service music team – grieving the Holy Spirit (re: VPS Jacobson, August 2008).
  • Your unwillingness to admit your authorship (in the Print Shop) of the machine-printed, anonymous kite that accused A.S. of stating he intended to rape Ms. Biendl. That is the vilest act of treachery one inmate can make against another; but you replied to me “If God doesn’t remember my sins, why should I?” (If I haven’t forgotten your treachery, what makes you think God has? God doesn’t forget anything; but He doesn’t recall our sins evidentially for judgment when we repent. He acts judicially to forgive not forget.)
  • Your deceit in denying that you plotted to attack her on the one night you knew the sponsors would leave before the offenders – after the 5th Saturday evening service.
  • Your deceit for blaming Jayme for murdering her. You falsely accused Jayme of insulting Brenda to your face, something Jayme would never do to any offender. Jayme never knew Brenda. Your “confession” was a cowardly lie to make it seem that you “escalated” rather than admit that you cunningly plotted to assault Ms. Biendl. (Although you denied it, that was clearly revealed in the cartoon of the wolf in sheep’s clothing you gave to her two days before you murdered her! You were playing with the victim like a cat with a mouse.)
  • Your evident lack of remorse for the harm you did to her and so many others emotionally.
  • Your failure to tell the truth about what led you to betray your professed faith in Christ. All the time I knew you, you were playing the Christian game but living a lie because of your hidden malice toward A.S. that caused you to revert into the monster you were before you were arrested for rape and attempted murder.

YOUR REPENTANCE IS INCOMPLETE! It’s far better that you come to terms with the depths of your depravity in this life than hear and feel it in full force on the Day of Judgment from Messiah the King and Supreme Judge. Because you lied and covered your tracks about all that I’ve written above, your spirituality is a hollow shell.

In your response, you suggested I had “a root of bitterness” for calling out your egregious, unconfessed, sins. May I remind you that Apostle Paul did the same thing when he rebuked the Corinthian church for tolerating immorality that paled in comparison to your treachery. As God’s chaplain, I reproved you so that you could make a complete confession and receive healing in your wounded soul. But you cited a few scriptures to put a band-aid over spiritual gangrene. Until you come clean about the malice and treachery that led you to murder C/O Biendl, and the demonized hatred that animated it, your profession of faith is hollow. Satan will always have a hook in your psyche to keep you a sociopath. By contrast, read how David responded to his struggles with iniquity:

For Your name’s sake, O LORD, pardon my iniquity, for it is great. Psalm 25:11

When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was drained away as with the fever of summer. I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD”; and You forgave the guilt of my sin. Psalm 32:3-5

“Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance.” Matthew 3:8. That’s the crux of the matter, Byron. Unconfessed sin always leads to a withdrawal of divine grace, “for God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.” It would have been far better if you had repented to Michael Jacobson for telling him in 2008 “If [A.S.] is on that [worship] team I want nothing to do with it.” Then you wouldn’t have been hooked by Satan into writing that malicious anonymous kite against S. in June 2009.

And it would even have been better for you to ask A.S.’s forgiveness after writing that kite and vow never to hold malice against him or anyone again. But he would have challenged you, as I would have, to make an open confession and accept the consequences; because you put great fear in Ms. Biendl’s mind towards A.S. when all along you were the real menace. But you hid your sin; so you couldn’t resist the pull of your old, vicious, rapist self that led you to backslide and then plot to rape and/or murder Jayme Biendl nineteen months later. Satan hooked you.

Unless you’re willing to face the truth about what went wrong in your psyche and actions, don’t bother writing back to me. I don’t care for deceitful scripture rationalizing. Your only meaningful task left on earth is to prepare your soul for heaven; and that will require genuine repentance, not the shallow, self-serving, misuse of scripture that amounts to cheap grace – as Dietrich Bonhoeffer rightly called it. But if you’re willing, finally, to make an honest, open confession, I’d be glad to hear it. It would also help others – especially in Jayme’s family – experience a measure of healing. The ball’s in your court – are you going to cover your sins like a coward or make an honest inventory of your past so as to be cleansed internally, sanctified, in the present and future?
